Youth Services Librarian
30 Hours per Week (Benefits Eligible)

The Hartland Public Library seeks an innovative, enthusiastic, and community-minded Youth Services Librarian to join our supportive team. You’ll be joining forward-thinking, creative librarians who focus on helping one another to build a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging community library. 

This is a hands-on, community-focused role where you’ll plan educational events, build diverse and engaging book collections, connect with local schools and organizations, and help local youth discover a lifelong love of reading and learning. You’ll foster intellectual curiosity and early literacy for children and youth ages 0–17,  and their caregivers and families. This position reports directly to the Library Director.

What You’ll Do

Create Educational, Fun & Engaging Programs

  • Plan and lead storytimes, crafts, summer reading activities, school vacation programs, and monthly special events for children, teens, and families
  • Develop exciting new programs that reflect the interests of the community and follow up-to-date educational trends for children and teens
  • Help promote events through library newsletters, social media, the library’s website and other news outlets

Help Young Readers Discover Great Books

  • Recommend books and resources for children, teens, caregivers, homeschoolers, and teachers
  • Build and maintain a diverse, inclusive, and engaging collection
  • Create eye-catching displays and welcoming spaces for our young patrons

Connect with the Community

  • Build partnerships with schools, homeschool groups, childcare providers, the Recreational Center, and Upper Valley community organizations
  • Visit local schools and community sites to share library services and programs, and conduct outreach
  • Create within the library, a vibrant hub for Upper Valley families
  • Supervise youth volunteers

Support Daily Library Services for All

  • Work at the circulation desk – welcome patrons and provide friendly and responsive customer service
  • Assist patrons with checking materials in and out, and answer reference and technical help questions
  • Help visitors use digital resources like Libby, Kanopy, and our other online resources
  • Attend library trainings, and professional development opportunities

Be Part of a Collaborative Team

  • Work closely with the Library Director and staff to develop Youth Services goals
  • Brainstorm with staff on how to make behind-the-scenes operations more efficient
  • Participate in staff development days and special projects that involve all staff, and attend monthly staff meetings

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library & Information Science (MLIS) is preferred
    OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with library management experience, plus the willingness to earn a Vermont Certificate of Public Librarianship within two years
  • A passion for public service and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion 
  • Knowledge of children’s literature, early literacy practices, and youth development 
  • Experience in collection development and budgeting 
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills 
  • Experience in planning and leading dynamic programs and events
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills

Pay & Benefits

This position is 30 hours per week, with two rotating Saturdays per month. The schedule for this position is Tuesday – Thursday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM and Fridays, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. 2 Rotating Saturdays, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. (Each time a Saturday is worked, you get the following Friday off.) Occasional evenings or extra weekend coverage required for special events.

Wednesday – 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Thursday – 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Friday – 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Saturday – 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (2 Saturdays a month, with the following Friday off)

The hourly pay rate is $25.50 – $27.50/per hour, depending on experience and credentials. This 30-hour full-time position includes the following benefits:

  • Health, dental, and life insurance (employee pays 25% cost of premium to reflect ¾ time position)
